Egg & Poultry Testing and Analysis

Taking poultry safety and quality measures to new heights is every producer, regulator, and consumer’s hope, and requires the most consistent, efficient, and compliant chemical and microbiological solutions available. We are committed to advancing food safety and quality of the poultry industry today, through lab testing efficiency & regulatory expertise for food manufacturers who care about tomorrow. Explore here some of the industry challenges and solutions for key aspects of poultry processing.

Let’s improve the safety and quality of poultry processing. Together.

Poultry Flock Testing
A critical and dynamic part of poultry flock management is the early detection and control of unwanted microbiological contaminants and residual therapeutic chemicals.

Poultry Processing
Salmonella
Salmonella contamination is the second leading cause of food-borne illness worldwide with two species, Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium being responsible for almost half of human infections. While infections can come from dairy and meat products, Salmonella risk is particularly high in poultry and eggs, making it an essential testing and regulatory target.

Campylobacter
Poultry is a major source of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli infection and can occur through the consumption of undercooked poultry meat or through cross-contamination of other food products in the kitchen.

Listeria
Listeriosis is a serious and increasingly frequent food-borne illness caused by Listeria monocytogenes. This hardy and ubiquitous bacterium found in plants, soil, and animal digestive tracts can withstand refrigeration and vacuum sealed packaging making it a growing concern to manufacturers designing food products with longer shelf life

Shigella
Shigella is a food-borne pathogen genus (Shigella sonneiShigella flexneriShigella boydiiShigella dysenteriae) gram-negative, facultative anaerobic Enterobacteriaceae that induces severe inflammatory colitis (Shigellosis) typically as a result of fecal contamination.

Staphylococcus
Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous skin, nose and throat bacteria that becomes a pathogen when food (like cooked chicken) is improperly handled, left at room temperature and the bacteria subsequently produce a toxin causing severe digestive tract distress.
Reference materials and CRMs for microbiology
Vitroids™ and LENTICULE® discs contain viable microorganisms in a certified quantity (ISO 17025), produced under reproducible conditions (ISO Guide 34) with strains obtained from CECT®, NCTC and other collections. The discs consist of bacteria or fungi in a solid water-soluble matrix. Microorganisms in this form are stable for at least one year and are in a viable stage (no lag phase or recovery time).

Heavy metals
Metals like lead, cadmium and mercury are naturally occurring chemical compounds. They might be found in food as residues because of their presence in the environment. Their accumulation in the human body can lead to harmful effects over time.

Egg Production Testing
There is increasing concern over the presence of insecticides (e.g. Fipronil), herbicides (e.g. Glyphosate), pharmaceuticals (e.g. Nitroimidazole) and food borne pathogens like Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in eggs, leading to more stringent regulatory guidance.
FDA suggested biosecurity practices should prevent Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) from coming in contact with resident birds on the farm and frequent facility testing for Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) significantly reduces transmission. In the case where production facility machinery or manure pits test positive, then shell eggs are also tested in accordance with FDA guidelines.

  • Rapid microbial molecular detection with the Assurance® GDS system

Poultry Nutrition Analysis
Chicken health and poultry nutrition can be measured by assays for protein, fatty acid, cholesterol, and micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) composition.
  • Assay kits for meat, poultry, pork and fish (animal protein) analysis
  • Identification of meat-quality using special indicator test strips for pH-measurement
  • Analysis of phosphorus (total) in meat and sausage products
  • Analysis of chloride in meat and sausage products
  • Analysis of nitrite in dried meat by reflectometry
  • Photometric determination of nitrite in poultry, meats, and sausage using the Griess method subsequent to extraction with water
