Bovine Serum Albumin is used for many applications, including the following applications:
- BSA has been used in cell culture, e.g. as a supplement in media prepared for culturing of oligodendrocytes.[1]
- Viene utilizzata per la diluizione di soluzioni di anticorpi primari in procedure di immunoistochimica.[2]
- Trova impiego come standard nel metodo di Bradford per la determinazione quantitativa delle proteine.[3]

Si sospetta che alcuni epitopi conformazionali e di sequenza primaria di BSA siano allergeni nelle allergie umane a carne bovina e latte.
General description
Bovine serum albumin is a protein whose key biological function is to regulate the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood. BSA is widely used in various studies and applications. La struttura nativa della proteina diventa reattiva e flessibile in seguito a riscaldamento.[7]
Preparation Note
Ci si riferisce alla sieroalbumina come Frazione V. Questa designazione è presa dal metodo originale introdotto da Cohn per frazionare siero proteine usando la precipitazione in etanolo a freddo. La sieroalbumina è stata trovata da Cohn nella quinta frazione col suo metodo basato sull′etanolo. Da allora il termine “Frazione V” è stato usato da alcuni a prescindere dal metodo di preparazione. Altri hanno usato questa terminologia riferita a sieroalbumina purificata con metodi di frazionamento basati su etanolo che sono stati profondamente modificati dai tempi in cui Cohn li ha descritti. Sigma-Aldrich produce e distribuisce sieroalbumine purificate con vari metodi primari inclusi il metodo originale di frazionamento di Cohn, metodi modificati di frazionamento con etanolo, shock termico e cromatografia. Stadi successivi di purificazione possono comprendere cristallizzazione o filtrazione su carbone attivo.
