Application

Glycoside used as a nonionic sufactant and adjuvant in vaccine development.
Saponin has been used:
  • as a wetting agent to study its effects on the floatability of six plastics
  • to permeabilize washed neutrophils for immunofluorescence
  • as a supplement in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) for immunocytochemistry

Biochem/physiol Actions

Saponins are nonionic surfactant that forms oil-in-water emulsions and acts as a protective colloid. They are used for the direct determination of metals in milk by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Features and Benefits

  • Suitable for Biochemical and Cell Biology research
  • Can be used with HPLC and Protein Quantification
  • High purity product for research applications

General description

Saponins, belonging to the class of steroid or triterpenoid glycosides, are widely distributed in plants, marine animals, and certain bacteria, serving as crucial compounds in various research fields, including biochemical, cell biology, and beyond. These amphipathic glycosides exhibit soap-like foaming in aqueous solutions due to their distinctive structure, featuring hydrophilic glycoside moieties combined with a lipophilic triterpene derivative.

Beyond their structural uniqueness, saponins play essential roles in biochemical processes, acting as secondary metabolites that facilitate protein penetration through cell membranes. Studies indicate their amphipathic nature and potential as hemolytic agents, contributing to their utility in immunoassays by stimulating the Th1 immune response and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte production. In cell biology, saponins find applications as nonionic surfactants, influencing cellular processes and interactions.

Moreover, saponins serve as promising components in vaccine research, functioning as adjuvants that can activate the mammalian immune system. This property, combined with their ability to solubilize low-density lipoproteins and regulate cholesterol concentration in micelles, makes saponins versatile and valuable in multidisciplinary research areas, including biochemical and cell biology research.
We are committed to bringing you greener alternative products, which adhere to one or more of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. This product is Bio-based and thus aligns with ″Use of Renewable Feedstocks″.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/418/501/product-dating-information-06-25-mk.pdf

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. what is the molecular weight of product: 84510

    1 answer
    1. The molecular weight of this product is not determined. However, historical data suggests this material contains saponins with a molecular weight range of 1400-2000 Daltons. The actual molecular weight is dependent upon the number of sugar residues attached to the core.

  4. Qual è la composizione del prodotto, o almeno da dove è derivato?

    1 answer
    1. This product is saponin from quillaya bark. This triterpene saponine consists of Quillaicacid (structure kindly find enclosed below) combined with saccharide chains. Hydrolysis yields Quillaic acid, glacturonic acid, glucuronic acid and galactose (from Roempp's Chemical Encyclopedia).
