Application

Certified for use as a counterstain for paraffin embedded botanical material; as a spore stain for bacteria by the method of Schaeffer and Fulton.
Malachite Green oxalate salt has been used for phosphate quantification.[1][2]
Malachite Green oxalate salt has been used:
  • in the preparation of Alexander staining solution for cell viability test[3]
  • in malachite green-ammonium molybdate assay for determining the adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity of binding immunoglobulin protein (BiP)[4]
  • as a hydrophobic ion, to study the label-free molecular transport in the living cell membranes of Escherichia coli in real time by second-harmonic generation (SHG) method[5]

General description

Malachite Green is a basic dye belonging to the triphenylmethane group. It is required in biology for the staining of microscopic samples, such as plant tissue, yeast and bacteria. The malachite green method is a sensitive method for the detection of released phosphate.[6][7]

Other Notes

The molecular mass of malachite green oxalate is expressed as either:
927.00 g/mol - the mass of 2 mol malachite green + 2 mol monohydrogen oxalate + 1 mol dihydrogen oxalate, or
463.50 g/mol - the mass of 1 mol malachite green + 1 mol monohydrogen oxalate + 0.5 mol dihydrogen oxalate
