General description

Dextran sulfate is a negatively charged sulfated polysaccharide,[1] which is produced by the esterification of dextran with chlorosulphonic acid.[2] It has antiviral, anticoagulant and adjuvant properties.[2] Dextran is used to treat hemorrhage, burns, surgery and trauma. It enhances blood flow and blocks erythrocyte aggregation. Dextran decreases the risk of thrombosis and postoperative pulmonary emboli.[3] It acts as a ribonuclease inhibitor.[4]

Application

Dextran sulfate sodium salt Leuconostoc spp has been used:
  • to delipidate fatty plasma(67)(70)
  • to induce inflammatory and carcinogenic response in the distal colon of rodents(68)
  • for the preparation of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)(69)
